Manteo

Letter from Periauger:

Manteo Wednesday, 1 September

When the sun rose today, Wednesday, I was still on Buddy parked in front of the Festival Park workshop. The guys came over to finish rigging me and to do a little cosmetic work on my nose.

They took me out and parked me in front of the Visitor Center. Ken stayed with me and did "interpretation" while John and Kent went into the theater and gave a presentation to a good sized crowd.

Soon after John came out I heard some talk about launching me. I was hesitant to let myself get too excited, but I have been smelling the nearby water for three days now.

My wish came true about an hour later. These guys are so good to me! They slid me off my trailer and, after towing me through a canal around behind Festival Park island, they put up my sails and cut me loose. Boy what a sail I had in those 10-15 knot breezes. My new mast - the solid one built by those volunteers in Hertford - feels strong. All of the cutting and filing they did to make it fit, worked beautifully.

John, Bill and Kent took me out. I also had on board Ted Huffman (from Hertford, and one of the originals on the project dating back 6 years), Bert Felton, our very talented and energetic "groupie" who works for the state of NC, and Aaron Gross, a costumed Elizabeth II interpreter. It was the first time out for Ted and he was thrilled, of course. They all agreed that this sail was for Monty Spindler, my "mid-wife," who is recovering well from surgery in Norfolk.

They took me on several passes toward the docks, and just when people thought I would come in to the dock, zoom! - out I went again. These guys are such teasers.

One aspect of my Odyssey is what the humans call a "shake-down cruise" - a period of testing of all aspects of my hull, rudder and rigging. Well, today a problem showed up with my rudder. A split showed up on my rudder post where the tiller exerts its pressure on the wood. I had felt it weakening, but it took a while for them to notice.

While John sailed me, Bill wrapped my rudder post tightly with some line (rope to landlubbers!). That did the trick enough to get us in to the dock on our last run across the bay. We landed with a thump at the docks to a cheering crowd.

It looks like Bill and John will be spending some more time working tomorrow at the workshop. But I still think I am worth it!

I have heard that tomorrow I may have some special guests aboard.

Stay tuned and I will let you know.
