Washington to Bath

Letter from Periauger:

Washington to Bath, Wednesday, 25 August

Here I am dictating again for my daily letter (I can't write but I hope I am telling a good story!)

I had a more leisurely morning on this day that we are leaving Washington around 1000. John, Noel and Bill calculated that it was only about 14 miles to Bath (all they had to do was ask me!).

I had a photographer on board today named Steve Early from the Virginian Pilot (I can't read, but they tell me it is a fine newspaper). We also had Jim Wilson, whom I heard is from a wildlife magazine, on board for this trip to Bath.

Any wind that came up today would be on our "nose" (even my broken one), so it was a towing day for Destiny and me, and an easy day for my crew aboard Kiwi Magic. After letting Steve take some pictures of me, Kiwi went ahead and anchored at the mouth of Bath Creek for lunch.

As my crew and managers ate lunch, the wind was freshening. These humans - always ready for the big moment of publicity - wanted to make a grand entrance to Bath Harbor and commander John and Captain Bill were anxious to get my sails up. So the crew and the two visitors came aboard and they cast off my line from Destiny's stern.

They sailed me back and forth way out in the river so that our itinerant photographer from the Virginian Pilot could get his photographs aboard Periauger. He was a nice man and very appreciative of what he was allowed to do by Bill and John. Destiny sailed real close to us a few times so John could get some more 60 second movies with his digital camera.

Then John and Bill agreed that we would try to transfer Steve to Destiny for some photos. (of me, of course). John put out lots of fenders (bumpers to land lubbers) on one side of Destiny. Bill and John maneuvered so that Steve could climb to Destiny. Joan helped Steve climb aboard. It went surprisingly well - and Destiny and I didn't exchange any paint!

While we were out there having all this fun, our two new support boats (for sleeping my crew) arrived from the east and entered the harbor: LaBelle, with her captain Kent Carver, and Norman's Conquest, with her captain Norman Ryan.

Alas, the time came to sail through the narrow entrance to Bath Creek. I led the way, with Destiny behind me, trying to go slow enough to not run me down as the wind dropped under the lee of the harbor shore. Kiwi Magic came in third.

Bill and Ken took me right up to the dock for an easy landing. Kiwi dropped anchor in the harbor and Destiny went over to the Bath Harbor Marina.

Everyone is asleep now, except for me while I dictate this letter.

Tomorrow I have a full day in Bath. I will be on display to 60 second grade children at 1000, and then another 60 fourth grade children at 1300. (I am assuming that you have the 24 hour clock figured out by now!)

Good night.
