Letter from Periauger: Wednesday, August 18, New Bern. Wow! Did I have a great sail today! After spending the morning letting my crew try to rig an awning for themselves (Picture 1), and after a heavy shower passed by around 1330 (1:30 pm for you landlubbers), they took me out in a glorious 10 to 14 knot wind (that's 12 to 17 miles per hour). Take a look at the photos that the commander took today! He also took a digital 60 second movie, and boy did my crew make me look good. Bill was my captain and Ken was at the helm, plus we had Harold, Ken C., Jim and Andrew for crew. My commander radioed words of encouragement and some suggestions from the dock - not that Bill and Ken really needed them. I guess he was just envious of them. Ah, humans! Anyway, as you can see from the photos, I had a bone in my teeth (meaning I was making a white wave curl at my bow) and my rail down close to the water! Commander John says it is better than sex - whatever that is! Tomorrow we head for Oriental, shoving off around 0900 (that should be an easier time to figure out). I can't wait to get out on the open water. And I know that when my friend Destiny wants to stop towing so she can sail, then I will be sailing too! Someone said we sold 60 of my nifty shirts in New Bern. That will be good for my education fund! I'll probably be too tired to write tomorrow evening after four or five hours on the water, so I'll catch up to y’all on Friday evening from Oriental. My commander says that some arrangements in Oriental have fallen through, so we'll see what he can work out for us. He has Claude Milot working on it, and that is good. More from me on Friday.
