Letter from Periauger:
Washington, Tuesday, 24 August
Today started off still and cool again in "little" Washington. My repairs were healing nicely. Lots of people came down early to see me and the interest continued all day. These Washington folks really have been great hosts.
The crew took me out for a late morning row and sail, after making more adjustments in my rigging. Bill had to re-rig some things because after he had made some corrections, someone did them back the way they were. I know who it was, but I won't tell!
Meanwhile commander John ran off at 1300 to do a presentation at the Estuarium. While he was busy doing that (he said there were fifty people attending!), Bill, Mike and Ken took me out with Noel, Myra and Joan aboard. They deserved a ride on me because of all the work they have done for me - Joan helming Destiny for John and feeding John and Bill and Kent, and Noel and Myra preparing three meals every day for my motley crew. They were all smiles when they came in. Next I hope Bill or John takes Claude and Yvonne for a sail, too.
About 1700, Claude and Ken drove to give a short presentation about me to a Rotary Club in Belhaven. Meanwhile, after dinner, Bill and John saw the wind come up better than it had been all day. So guess what? I got a third sail in today! With the help of Bert, Kent and Mike, and newby's Roger Ramsey and Penny Leary-Smith, John and Bill took me out again. It was lovely out there with the orange ball of a sun setting through the haze, John and Bill sharing the helm and Roger and Penny learning the ropes and oars from Bert, Kent and Mike. It was almost dark when we came in.
My crew says it looks like a short trip to Bath coming up tomorrow. I hope the winds are good for sailing.
Goodnight all!
