Letter from Periauger:
Bath, Thursday, 26 August
Dear fans,
Day 12 of my trip broke with fog in Bath Harbor. I had a quiet rest at the State Dock, right next to my new friends LaBelle (Mr. Carper's boat, which also had Ken Reis sleeping for the night) and Norman's Conquest (Mr. Ryan's boat, which had Mike Butler and Keith Lambert for the night). Kiwi Magic, my crew's feeding boat, was anchored out in the small harbor, and Destiny was over in the marina across from my dock.
As people came down to see me at the dock, I heard them saying that there were two groups of children who would be coming to get to know me. I love children! They are so curious and energetic, but can't imagine having them around all the time.
Sure enough, about ten o'clock about 60 second graders from the Bath elementary school came walking down in single file to the lawn leading to the dock. While Ken warmed them up by talking to them about me and my former life in the colonies, Bill, with the help of Joan (a retired teacher), Keith Lambert (who just arrived yesterday and is also a retired teacher), Mike, Kent S., Noel and Myra, set up a really clever hands-on lesson in rowing. He had eight children, selected ahead of time by their teachers, sit along two sides of the dock. The pictures taken by commander John and Kent S. tell the whole story.
Then Bill and Kent S. and Mike took me out on the water where the kids could watch them row and put up my sails. What a great treat for me!! We sailed around on a gentle breeze while the kids cheered from the shore. My crew had to cut it short - but only because the kids had to go back to school, and my crew had to eat lunch. (I can't imagine having to stop what I'm doing just to "eat.")
In the afternoon, it was a group of 4th graders who came down to see me. They did better with the heavy oars, but didn't pay attention quite as well as the 2nd graders. Ken started it off again with his talk and his questions for them about this "one-of-a-kind" boat (me!). Bill, Joan and Mike took me out again. This education stuff suits me fine!
My Commander went off to give another presentation (pictures of me!) to the older people.
After sailing twice today, I thought they were finished with me. However, along came a strange looking human, whom I vaguely remember seeing in a previous life, and a photographer from Fountain Boat Works, whom my commander and captain had both agreed could use me to take pictures. The strange human climbed aboard me. Bill, Kent and Ken took me out for another sail so I didn't really care who he was.
They sailed me past the State Dock several times, where the photographer was stationed, while this strange man with bushy jet black hair and red ribbons in his long black beard. All went smoothly for several passes, except when Ken steered me too close to Kiwi Magic. I tried to warn Kiwi, but it was too late and I got tangled up in her anchor line. John and Noel came out with dinghies to help where they could. Bill was not a very happy camper after that mishap!
On the final pass, the strange one, who was wearing a bandolier of pistols, growled and set off a muzzle loader too close to Bill, who nearly jumped off me. It suddenly occurred to me that I had heard about this man from older boats in Bath. They told the tale of a "pirate' named Black Beard who had lived in this town in 1712 or so, and I have this strange feeling that I was there in the spirit of another boat. Here is a picture of me with Blackbeard taken by John from his dinghy, my friend Beagle.
Well that was an exciting day, for sure. Around dinner time, my crew and all of the odyssey people went off to a pizza party at the unique and lovely home of ...hmmm...I think John said Pat and Mike Mansfield.
Noel and John took their dinghies down the river to the house. When they returned, they raved about the homemade gourmet pizzas that Mike kept turning out of his oven. Sometimes I do wish I had to eat, so I could try some of these things that put smiles on the faces of my crew!
Tomorrow we make our run to Belhaven. The winds are forecast to be from the east at about 10-15 again, so it will be a combination of towing behind Destiny and sailing. I am looking forward to both. Just don't put me on that trailer again!
Good night,
Periauger
