Beaufort

Letter from Periauger:

Sunday, August 15th., Beaufort.

Well I am still here sitting in the protection of the boat shed, waiting for my dreadful trailer ride tomorrow. This day was not as exciting as yesterday's hurricane, and at first was a disappointment. My Commander John and my Captain Monty had said we would go out sailing and rowing today, but it poured most of the day and they were too wimpy to to take me out.

But then I got all kinds of neat toys to put aboard. Those humans sure like to take a lot of things along. Do they think I'm going to sink? But it looks like I'll be well equipped by their standards. Just please put me in the water!

Don Johnson (the trailer guy) experimented with ways to pack up my spars so I don't get damaged while on the trailer. Don's brother Fred was there to help, and Commander John and some other people were running around looking for a place to set up some tables for a "party" - whatever that is.

And then, wouldn't you know, by five o'clock (it was still pouring rain) there was a nice crowd of friendly faces - a lot of the folks who built me piece by piece were being honored for their hard work. Noel and Myra McKechie (from my friend Kiwi) were very busy setting up all the food they had made, with help from some people I haven't seen before but I know are part of my expedition: Claude and Yvonne Milot and Ken Ries.

My Captain Monty Spindler, my midwife of sorts, was introduced by my commander (funny guy) and gave a speech (not his first, obviously) and gave out some handsome looking certificates to all the volunteers and other folks. Several other people said a few words, and they were, thankfully, short, even though some guys from WUNC TV were there filming this friendly affair.

The best part was having everyone come lean on me and talk and even put their drinks on my rail. A cozy little gathering to start off my big trip!  And now I know what a party is - and I look forward to many more!

The sun finally came out just before a gorgeous sunset, and a great and good omen appeared: a full rainbow from horizon to horizon off to the east. I hope that makes my crew as happy as it makes me and that we can now have a few days without rain.

See you in New Bern,

Periauger
