The Periauger Project to construct a replica of an eighteenth-century workboat is a partnership of Perquimans County Restoration Association, Perquimans County, North Carolina Maritime Museum and East Carolina University’s Program in Maritime Studies. When completed the1730 Newbold-White House and Historic Hertford, Perquimans County, NC, will be the home ports.
The vessel’s construction and sea-trials were completed in summer of 2004 at the NC Maritime Museum in Beaufort, NC. It is 30 ft overall, with 7 ft beam and was originally designed to carry many barrels and/or sacks of corn, wheat & rice, bricks, rum, etc., or to be fitted out for military duty. (Benedict Arnold reports having one in his Revolutionary War fleet)
It is propelled by its two sails, and/or by up to eight sweeps. After sea-trials, the vessel was sailed from Beaufort to its home port of Hertford in what was called The Periauger Odyssey - a three week voyage bringing an 18th century vessel to a 21st century population. When conditions were not satisfactory for sailing the vessel was towed. It was escorted the entire voyage by a small fleet of volunteer support and supply boats.
Periauger is now docked at Hertford Town Dock, just upstream of the famous S-bridge, while a new dock is constructed at the Newbold-White House
