New Bern

Letter from Periauger:

Monday, August 16, New Bern.

This day started off wretchedly. The weather was very nice, but early in the morning I was strapped down to the trailer and forced to breath diesel fumes for the 80 minute trip from Beaufort to New Bern! I must say, however, that I rode on my trailer in style and turned a few heads.

Everything changed as we got off the road in New Bern. I smelled water, and my hopes began to rise. Captain John, who arrived by car (my friend Destiny was still in Beaufort waiting to be launched), had the crew unstrap me, step my masts, and then rig my sails. Was I really going sailing? Shiver me timbers!

Then my Captain did something that seemed strange at first: he had the crew man the oars with me still on the trailer (my aching back!). He was calling out commands (he needed to work on those) and the crew was learning to row (also needed work).  I thought I would never get to go sailing.

But then the glorious moment arrived, as they let me slide off the trailer into the Trent River. Harold, Jim, Bret, Andy and Ken C. rowed me out (actually doing much better, now) and my captain turned me into the wind. He ordered my lovely sails hoisted - what sweet words! Ken R. hoisted them briskly and we were off in confident style, sailing along across the light wind at almost five knots. We turned and ducked and leaned! And all under a blue sky.

We sailed back and forth a few times in view of the the WUNC-TV cameras aboard Loralar, whom I had not met until today and who belongs to Larry McNellis. Then we breezed through the open railroad bridge and made our grand entrance into the docks at Sheraton New Bern Marina. My Captain sailed me right up to the docks in front of a small crowd. (Monty would have loved to see it!)

Captain John seemed doubly pleased as we arrived at the dock, because in the crowd was a good friend of his from Rhode Island - Bill Andersen, who handled the lines like an old salt. I heard John say that Bill was going to by my "captain" for the rest of the trip, in place of Monty, so I had better be good to Bill and mind my manners! It seems that Bill has had all kinds of experience on historic wooden boats - some of my cousins, no doubt - and has some kind of big time captains license and lots of time on the big oceans. We'll see how he does with me!

I heard them say that tomorrow people will be allowed to stare at me for a while - in admiration of course! - as I sit at the dock and then we will sail a few miles up the Trent River and back. After such an exciting day, I hope I can get a good night’s sleep.

I guess that rainbow was a good omen after all.

good night.
