Mission of Periauger

Mission of the Periauger:

The mission of the Periauger is to reopen a unique chapter of Colonial American maritime history by relearning long-lost forms of traditional boat building during its construction, studying and documenting how this Periauger maneuvers while at sea, and reintroducing this noteworthy workboat to the Carolina waterways in order to provide residents, visitors, schoolchildren and scholars an opportunity to enjoy and study this one-of-a-kind historic replica.

 Objectives:

 1.                 To complete the construction of the Periauger by May 2004, conduct and document sea trials in June, and embark on a sea voyage to Hertford to arrive on September 11, 2004.

2.                 To provide visitors and residents of Hertford, while docked in Hertford Harbor through 2006, with interpretive programs and signage outlining the significance of the Periauger to our maritime heritage.

3.                 To incorporate the Periauger into the daily interpretation at the Newbold-White House, thus providing visitors with a better understanding of the region’s significant maritime heritage.

4.                 To create special hands-on interpretive programs, offered through the Newbold-White House, to illustrate to the public the significant role this Periauger and other workboats played in colonial America.

5.                 To transport the Periauger, either by water or roadway, to other locations as a historic tool to promote the Newbold-White House, Perquimans County and our maritime heritage.
