return to Newbold-White House Site

Hertford Christmas Parade

Saturday, December 3.

Last Monday, John, Don, Kent and Hutch all came down to haul me out of the water (I must admit is was getting a bit cold and lonely down there) onto buddy, my trailer. They took me to my winter home at Newbold White House, stowed away my masts, stepped my short masts and installed my winter cover.  But before they left they said I could expect one more outing very soon.

Sure enough, this morning, Ken Reis showed up and started to remove my cover.  Then Hutch came and started to hook buddy up to his truck. Very soon more friends arrived, all dressed up in period costume: Janet Benton, Terry and Beryl Facey, Alan Thompson, and Steve Pinada with his wife Darlene and their son “RJ”. They were talking about a Christmas Parade and I remembered that event from last year: a road tour, on buddy, of Hertford with hundreds of people and children lining the streets.  I began to get excited - you know how I love an audience.

Since I am owned by a Quaker family, I am not used to getting all dressed up, but they did hang an evergreen garland around my gunwale in recognition of the season.  Then Hutch drove buddy and me to the High School to rendezvous with the rest of the parade.  My crew for the day followed by van and car; some of them made a detour to the Episcopal Church for hot soup.  While waiting for the action, Ken thought it a good time to break out the coffee and have a mini-tailgate party on buddy’s toolbox.

We had time for a group photo of the crew ......

.... and then we moved off, taking our place in the parade.....

It was great fun parading in front of all the townspeople and especially the many children who turned out to see me. I was having so much fun I hardly noticed we were on our way back to the High School and it was all over for this year. My crew brought me back to Newbold White House, and put back my covers, so I am all snug and dry for the winter.

I think I will spend the winter planning some more exploits for next year. I will see y’all in spring. Goodnight.
