Oriental

Letter from Periauger:

Friday, August 20, Oriental.

Dear human friends,

This morning was dedicated to making some changes in my rigging. Larry Babits and Bill Andersen - my captain - removed some fairleads and blocks and put them somewhere else where they would work better.

Had a lot of visitors today and sold a lot of T-shirts. My crew from Durham was to leave after lunch and the "newbies" arrive about the same time. My captain and my commander both joked with the departing crew about keeping my "old" crew away from the "new crew" so no bad habits would be passed along.  I have really enjoyed my time rowing and sailing with Harold, Ken C., Jim and Andrew. I think they had a good time on this adventure, also, and said they wanted to sign on again if possible.

After lunch, Bill met with the new crew on my dock to prepare them for those rowing commands (which I don't understand myself).  They weren't wearing those nifty colonial outfits, which the seamstresses at Newbold-White House made so beautifully, because they needed desperately to be washed for the new crew. Suits me fine, because they get pretty close when they sit on my thwarts to row!

Ken R. took the tiller and we were off, rowing out between my big fishing buddies. I could feel that the wind was a spanking 12 to 15 knots, so I really was excited as they set my sails! they sailed me way out into the middle of the river they call the Neuse. I don't know what it means and don't care as long as it is wet and windy. All of the changes that Bill and Larry made felt good. Everyone is getting better at sailing me, but I could tell that Larry Babits was particularly excited about being aboard.

Tomorrow they will take me to some place about 25 nautical miles away called Goose Creek and anchor me overnight. It is a wild and isolated place, but I will be very comfortable there. Maybe I'll see some of my friends the geese and egrets and ospreys. I have to rest up now because I feel in my wood that the wind will be up in the morning and I won't need to be towed. Maybe Destiny can get her sails up too!

Brisk breezes and safe harbors.
