Down the River

My First Outing for 2007:  Elizabeth City

By Miss Periauger

Now that I am all newly varnished and repaired, I finally got to do something useful.

It seems that the Museum of the Albemarle was putting on their annual “Down the River” day for area 4th graders, who are learning colonial history. They took me there last year, and although I never saw any water it was good to help educate all those children about my past.

Alan Thompson had organized our team for this year’s trip to MOA.  On Thursday, around 1500, Hutch, Don, Alan, and John packed me up and towed me to the grounds of MOA.  They stepped my masts with the help of Mike the security guy at MOA, and secured all my equipment in the museum for the night. Ken Ries showed up as planned with his mobile RV and stayed right next to me for the night.

By 0730 on Friday, John and Alan had arrived and joined Ken in carrying out the sweeps, sails and equipment bags.  They scraped the ice off my thwarts (John almost landed head first in my bilge when he tried to walk on a thwart!). Anne Haas and Barb Mueller, old hands at this, arrived too.   My sweeps were in place and my sails bent on and hoisted just in time for the first bus load students.

John’s pictures tell the story.  Alan, Barb and Anne took turns at the helm and sweeps as John or Ken attempted to keep the attention of each group of twenty 4th graders. Every 20 minutes or so, Charlotte, the event coordinator, rang her bell and the students, with “encouragement” from their teachers, change to another of the ten education exhibits. She also brought needed water around to the exhibitors.

Barb and Anne demonstrate how to do precision rowing, and Ken teaching….

….and more teaching! I bet Ken’s arms were as tired as his voice!

.

My friend the Silver Chalice from Beaufort was there on her trailer. And my buddy Black Beard was there firing off his cannon!

After ten repetitions in three hours of my life and times with Abraham Sanders, Anne, Barb, John, Ken, Hutch and Alan were happy to walk over (in costume) to the Cypress Gill for some well deserved lunch.  The air had warmed up nicely by then, and I heard them talking about taking off the extra layers of clothing they had worn under their costumes.

Hutch came back around noon with his truck, in time for lunch and to help the others down-rig and haul me back to the Newbold-White House. By 1600 they had me safely parked near the Newby House, ready for my next event.

The whole crew - me, Ken, Anne, Alan, Barb, Hutch and John

Note: remind John or Don to buy a new plug for my bilge hole before we put me back in the water.   I won’t sink to the bottom, but they might have a lot of pumping to do!

The End
