Except for three very hot and humid Saturday sailings (two of which I wrote about already and were put on my web site with photos) with some very interesting guests, I spent most of the summer sitting in the cool water at my dock hoping for a cool breeze and letting people admire my nice varnish job from last April. (Ken and John did take me out [Ed: August 26th] for an hour on the river in light winds. That was so that Mack Sawyer could take pictures of me for the cover of Wildlife of NC magazine!)
A few days before the new moon [Ed: on August 31st], I became the center of attention as North Carolina's US Senator Burr came by during his visit to Hertford. Although Ken and Janet were there in costume, and John was just passing by to take pictures, no one took me sailing. The kind Senator did climb aboard to sit on my forward thwart, as he led a small town meeting with the Mayor and several council ‘persons’ looking on. (These humans like it when I am ‘politically correct’; not bad for someone more in the 18th century than the 21st. Reluctantly, I am learning.)
County Manger Bobby Darden, Historic Hertford, Inc. Pres. Wendy Jewett, PCRA Pres. Chris Lane, Hertford Mayor Sid Eley, County Commissioner Susan Weimar, Town Manger John Christensen, Senator Burr, Councilman Ben Hobbs (and Janet Benton behind the mast, holding the blowing sail away from their heads so they wouldn't all be swept off the dock).
It was an interesting day, but not very exciting for me. But I am sure there will be many exciting days to come.
